One of Berlin’s most famous contemporary art galleries opened their new space during the Gallery Weekend with an amazing exhibition of the Berlin based Ukranian-born artist Boris Mikhailov.

Truly – and we know this out of experience – the images Mikhailov shoots with his camera can only be Ukrainian. What is the Ukranian identity? Why is it so remarkably uncomfortable? His photos show petty criminals, prostitutes, drunks, bums, sometimes naked, sometimes even pornographic. The idea of beauty needs to be reconsidered, as Mikhailov is a conceptual photographer.

The two series presented at the gallery were shot in two different periods. The first series after are original photographic prints was made during the soviet era, the latter after the collapse of the Soviet Union and during the ‘westernization’ of the Ukraine. These ‘Modern Times’, Mikhailov portrays, are spiced with specific provactive and often uncomfortable humour.
