Exhibition "WAQ WAQ" (Installations and Paintings) of Johan Tahon at Galerie Artist Berlin

Exhibition is open from 22.4.2011 to 21.5.2011

Finally WAQ WAQ comes to Berlin! WAQ What? WAQ WAQ, the migrating sculpture. Starting from Tahon’s studio, it landed first at Galerie Van De Weghe in Antwerp (December 2010 – January 2011), Belgium, and last weekend was celebrated at Berlinaire Festival, in Ghent (8. -9. April 2011), Belgium. Now, the sculpture by Johan Tahon hits the capital of the art world.

WAQ WAQ is a mystery, a totem, in constant change, modifying the architectural spaces it inhabits. It has extended multiple plaster arms/roots, which interconnect the rooms of the exhibition space and a not that small penis. The multiple arms stretch into space and bear ceramic heads. These heads look Asian and make us think of the China's Qin Terracotta Warriors; however their faces are more gentle and smiling as if from a TinTin cartoon. One of Berlin’s famous art critics recently stated there is a Manga feeling to this sculpture.

For his first solo exhibition at the Berlin branch of the Istanbul and Ankara based Galeri Artist, the artist manages to expand the meaning of this work and reintroduces the classical media of plaster sculpture in an innovative way. Behold WAQ WAQ, a silent towering inferno of meanings.
