Andreas Schulze - Smudge corner

Smudge corner (Untitled "Dreckecke") is a work from 1985 of Andreas Schulze. It consists of three parts of hand-woven small carpets, or rugs, as they are called by the gallery, stuck to the walls and the floor in a corner in the smaller exhibition space of the impressive Sprüth Magers Berlin branch (600 square metres of exquisite exhibition white wide space).

It is one of the intimate and less visible works in the exhibition, not as ambitious as most of the paintings, but of an incredible impact. You might discover the sneer to Fettecke (Grease Corner), a work by Joseph Beuys, who was professor at the Academy in Dusseldorf, same period as Schulze was studying there. This work projects us outside of the exhibition space. Perhaps, I need to wipe my feet before I enter? The walls seem to curl inside out or outside in? One of the oldest magnetising art historical concepts, the old in-and-out ploy, Peter Sellers would say. Schulze (b. 1955) also shows recent works of 2010 in various compositions and in combination with a wall painting, a blue corner about 10 metres width to 5 metres high; rather clean and geometric.
