Exhibition of Karin Sander at Neuen Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin

Exhibition is open from 5.03.2011 to 1.05.2011

Karin Sander

Don’t let yourself be fooled by Karin Sander’s work at the NBK! When passing the large windows onto Chausseestraße you discover the almost empty exhibition space with several piles of rubbish. “Well, we have seen it before... booring”, is the first reaction. However you are magically drawn back to the exhibition, yes you are! You return when the exhibition is open, lights are on and after you have been shopping in Feinkost Plus – a little further down the street. You enter the exhibition space. You inspect the piles. You’re not a fan of reading exhibition texts while visiting the exhibition, but this one is short, so hey, why not. Your hands are frozen because of this long lasting Berlin winter - shitty cold!

At that very moment you remark the holes in the ceiling. Ola, you think by yourself, what is this?! And then the text comes in handy. The ceiling is the floor of the NBK administration upstairs and the holes are where the trash bins used to be. The staff now has thin steel skeletons instead waste baskets; they perform the same function, yet without an ability to contain the trash. The trash of the NBK team becomes art once it falls into the gallery through the hole in the floor/ceiling. Great, you think, this is contemporary slapstick as you like it, and a political statement about the art object. You leave the exhibition space, and picture Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Duchamp and Lewis Carroll drinking tea in the Garden.
